Facebook is changing its Name! What is Meta?

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Empire, announced that Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta. Now it is officially confirmed that Facebook’s corporate name changed to Meta.

Before, a radical transformation was rumored, but now it is officially confirmed. Mark Zuckerberg has announced formally in Companies AR/VR focused Connect event.

Mark Zuckerberg Makes an Official Statement about New Name

The company’s founder Mark Zuckerberg revealed the change in the company’s AR/VR-focused Connect event. He says that the new label of Facebook will better convey the company’s primary purpose: to build the Metaverse. He says, “We are a company that creates technology to connect. Collectively, we put the people in the center of technology and unlock a huge creator economy”.

We reflect on who we are and what we hope to create; I am proud to announce that we are changing our company name to Meta. Our mission is the same is to bring people together. Our brands and apps are not changing either. From now onwards, we are known by Metaverse – not Facebook first.

The redesign is part of the business’s purpose to switch gears away from being identified as just a social network company and focus on Zuckerberg’s goals for building Metaverse, the Verge initially reported on October 19th July. In July, he says to Verge that Facebook will effectively change from people considered as a social media company to be a Meta – Verse Company in the next several years.

Why Name Change Decision and Why is it called Meta?

Mark Zuckerberg himself changes its brand name because Facebook increases its services from a social media platform to other sectors, such as virtual reality. The Greek meaning of Meta is ”Beyond,’‘ and it is better to reflect the company name and its goal.

He aims to utilize the Facebook portal to create a ‘‘metaverse’‘, an online hub for users to communicate quickly, game, and work in a virtual landscape.

The Metaverse also adds other feature developments and the use of VR headsets. Critics are saying that the company rebrand decision arises after negative stories surrounding Facebook. Facebook’s reputation has taken many hits, including withholding information about the Covid vaccine.

What is Metaverse?

The Metaverse does not exist to date. The idea was popularized by the 1992 novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, a constant virtual reality world navigated by the book’s protagonist. Other scientific books, movies, and TV shows also show the “mirror worlds” where everything in the actual world has a digital counterpart.

Some people believe that Metaverse is the future of the internet that connects individuals through VR headsets and communicating across various digital channels.

This proposed change will change many aspects of our lives, including work, shopping, plays, concerts, and socializing. It will make an impact on the digital sphere on our current use of social media.

Zuckerberg was evident in his statement that Metaverse is a long-term project, and the final product has not been created.
